How to Best clean Copper and other Metals
Am I the only one who takes joy in finding Antiques, that have“patina” aka in need of a good cleaning and you find yourself weighing is it even worth bringing said Antiques home?. This Blog post is for You, if you’ve ever found yourself in that Situation.
In January, I saw an ad on marketplace, That had boxes of Copper pieces and silver and brass.I immediately sent the seller a message, even though the items were absolutey FILTHY and tarnished,because I knew how to redeem the situation.
I don’t want to strip any metal pieces I purchase and so I avoid all types of harsh soaking when working with Antique metals. Even Salt and vinegar methods can change the colors of Antique metals.
I washed all the pieces with hot,soapy water first
I use three basic items when cleaning copper.
Scrub Daddy Sponges - they have a scrubber side, as well as a scratch side {but they will not scratch!}
Brasso - Liquid Cleaner you will want to use in a well venilated area, wear gloves as well.
Paper towels- after items are cleaned and washed, if you use paper towels, it will make the metals dry better than cloths.
I pour liquid brasso onto the palm of my hand (gloved) and gently spread it all over the piece i am cleaning i set it aside and let it rest a bit but make sure you evenly coat the item. Then I use my scrub daddy and scrub In a circular motion working in even lines across the item. When item is clean and the patina you want it, simply rinse in warm water and buffet dry with paper towels. Some items may need additional brasso, you can let set with the brasso on for longer. I will add lots of before and after photos of items I am bringing to Mywhiteporchshoppe sales as well as a little side by side photo of my personal pans as I was cleaning them!. I hope this is helpful, cheers to Rescuing and using all the best Antiques!. -Grace
